Assistant SheriffSan Francisco Sheriff's OfficeAssistant Sheriff Tanzanika Carter began her career in law enforcement in 1996 as a Deputy Sheriff with the San Francisco Sheriff’s Office. After 3 years, she lateraled to the Bay Area Rapid Transit Police Department (aka BART PD).
Tanzanika served 21 years with the BART PD and promoted to the rank of Lieutenant. She then became the Zone Commander of the Contra Costa area --overseeing 50 plus personnel which included five direct report locations. In her tenure with BART, Assistant Sheriff Carter served as a Hostage Negotiator, Criminal Investigator, Field Training Officer, Chaplain Coordinator, Field Training Sergeant, Patrol Sergeant, and Zone Commander. Tanzanika is currently the Assistant Sheriff for the San Francisco Sheriff’s Office (SFSO). She is responsible for and supervises the Custody, Field, and Administration Divisions. She also assists with the racial equity action plan for the Sheriff’s Alliance for Equity (SAFE) Team and facilitates the 30x30 Initiative. Tanzanika received a Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice Administration and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Ethnic Studies from California State University, East Bay. She also received a Master of Arts in Organizational Leadership from California Coast University. She is currently pursuing a Masters in Law Enforcement and Public Safety Leadership from the University of San Diego. She is a graduate from the Sherman Block Supervisory Leadership Institute (SBSLI) and the FBI National Academy, Session #282. Tanzanika is a Lifetime member of the National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives (NOBLE). She is also a member of the National Association of Women Law Enforcement Executives (NAWLEE), International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP), and the California State Sheriff’s Association (CSSA). |
